Congress scion Rahul Gandhi is all set to celebrate his 39th birthday today in London, quietly and with close friends. Party sources confirmed yesterday that Rahul had already left for London. The celebration will be a private dinner, most likely with friends from his Cambridge days and some old family friends.
Rahul is not known for celebrating his birthdays in India. Also, London seems to be his favourite holiday destination — it was reported that last year, too, he had a private birthday party there.
According to the sources, Sonia Gandhi is expected to be with Rahul today. There was no confirmation on whether sister Priyanka and brother-in-law Robert Vadra would join them or not.
Congress workers have been told to refrain from any grand celebrations. A senior functionary says on condition of anonymity, “There are clear instructions from 12 Tughlak Lane that there will be no grand celebrations. Party members have been asked to visit Dalit bastis and slums and distribute fruits and sweets there.”

Youngsters think this is the time for the country’s most eligible bachelor to tie the knot, and also maintain his leadership. JNU student Shahnawaz Khan wishes him saying, “May you be blessed with health and luck so that the nation can fulfil its aspirations under your leadership. But it’s also time that you sought a partner.”
Neha Uppal, an aspiring DU student, says, “Rahul has shown how complete a package he is of charming looks and intelligence. On his birthday, I wish him all the success to become the next PM.”
Some want return gifts, too. Bharat Singh Atwal, a 26-year-old entrepreneur, says, “On his birthday, he should promise the nation that he will induct more youngsters like him into politics.”
